2021/22 PROGRAMME: MYTHS & DREAMS

We are delighted to return to the stage with Myths & Dreams, an ambitious and innovative programme created by four choreographers: Fertile Ground Artistic Directors Renaud Wiser and Malgorzata Dzierzon and guest artists Fabritia D'Intino and Clémentine Vanlerberghe. The Company’s new season brings together collaborators from the fields of dance, film and digital sculpture in an imaginative evening performed by the cast of top North East emerging professional dancers.

Touring across the region and beyond they will present Somnium which has captured dreams at the time of pandemic, the hypnotic Plubel and Labyrinth, freely inspired by the myth of the Minotaur.

If you saw the show on tour, we’d love to know what you thought. Please take two minutes to answer this short survey. We'd really appreciate it.

"Sound and images, gesture and movement are hypnotic, uneasy, recreating the kind of disturbed surreality of anxiety-induced dreams which I suspect many of us experienced over those fifteen months when our lives – and minds – were turned upside down."
British Theatre Guide Myths & Dreams Review

"Myths & Dreams is a wonderful collective of individual, micro, artistic decisions and dance steps combining to make one interesting big idea. Wow."

From a duo of rising European choreographers Fabritia D'Intino and Clémentine Vanlerberghe, Fertile Ground brings to Dance City Plubel. In this hypnotic journey of imitation, the two women explore chorality as an act of resistance and a tool to reveal what has been made hidden. From the mass, the group, each female figure is extracted to reveal its individuality as a possible attempt of emancipation. Plubel has toured extensively across Europe and was featured as part of choreographic competition Danse Élargie at the Theatre de La Ville (Paris) and the Danse Élargie Suite programme at Sadlers Wells (London). This year it is coming to Dance City as part of Fertile Ground’s Myths & Dreams programme.

LABYRINTH

Labyrinth, a cross-disciplinary work by Renaud Wiser, freely inspired by the myth of the Minotaur. In contrast with the classical narrative, in Labyrinth the Minotaur is portrayed as a symbol of hybridity representing the complexities of modern times. In our creative process, the dancers are immersed in a virtual environment created by sculptor Marie Lelouche and develop choreography in response to her sculptures. On stage, the performers' movement reveals this virtual maze brought to life by projections and a haunting sound design.
